This page works out how much a pug should eat in a day, and how many of those calories can go to treats. Enter your dog’s weight and condition. Pounds or kilograms both work, and you can use the calorie number from any food bag: per cup, per kg, or per 100 g. The formula and the sources behind every number are listed below the calculator.
Pug daily calorie and treat calculator
Enter weight and condition to see daily calories and the treat limit. Add your food’s calorie content to get the daily amount in cups or grams.
Formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75; daily need = RER × condition factor; treats = 10% of the daily need. These are starting points, not a prescription. If your dog has a health condition or its weight changes quickly, talk to your veterinarian first.
Why the feeding chart on the bag isn’t enough
Feeding charts are written for an average dog of a given weight. They don’t know whether your pug is spayed or neutered, a couch potato, or getting older, and those things change daily energy needs by 30% or more.
With pugs, that gap matters. Extra weight presses on an airway that is already narrow, so an overweight pug has a harder time breathing, especially in hot weather. That’s why it’s worth running the numbers once instead of scooping by eye.
The formula
Resting Energy Requirement (RER) = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
This is the energy a dog burns at rest. It is the standard formula used in veterinary nutrition. If you only know the weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 first; the calculator does this for you.
Daily Energy Requirement = RER × condition factor
| Condition | Factor |
|---|---|
| Adult, spayed or neutered | 1.6 |
| Adult, intact | 1.8 |
| Overweight-prone, inactive, or senior | 1.4 |
| Needs to lose weight | 1.0 |
These are the factors listed by the Pet Nutrition Alliance. The 2021 AAHA guidelines give ranges around the same values (for example 1.4–1.6 for neutered adults), so if your dog is gaining weight on the number above, try the lower end.
Treat limit = daily calories × 10%
Treats and extras should stay under 10% of daily calories, with the rest coming from a complete and balanced food. On days your pug gets a lot of treats, give a little less food to keep the total the same.
Quick reference for common pug weights
Spayed or neutered adults (factor 1.6). The last column assumes a food with 380 kcal per cup; check your own bag and use the calculator for your food.
| Weight | Daily calories | Treat limit | Food at 380 kcal/cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 lb (5.4 kg) | 399 kcal | 40 kcal | about 1 cup |
| 14 lb (6.4 kg) | 448 kcal | 45 kcal | about 1 1/8 cups |
| 16 lb (7.3 kg) | 495 kcal | 50 kcal | about 1 1/4 cups |
| 18 lb (8.2 kg) | 541 kcal | 54 kcal | about 1 3/8 cups |
| 20 lb (9.1 kg) | 585 kcal | 59 kcal | about 1 1/2 cups |
| 22 lb (10.0 kg) | 629 kcal | 63 kcal | about 1 5/8 cups |
For an 18 lb pug, the whole treat budget is about 54 kcal a day. That goes fast, so it helps to read the calories per treat on the package before handing them out.
Before you use these numbers
- They are estimates. Two dogs of the same weight can need quite different amounts
- Weigh your pug every week or two and adjust the amount based on the trend
- If your dog has a medical condition, has suddenly gained or lost weight, or has lost its appetite, see your veterinarian before changing its diet
- Puppies and pregnant or nursing dogs need different factors. This calculator is for adult dogs
- Measure with a real measuring cup or, better, a kitchen scale. A heaping scoop can be far more than one cup
